Zoom reveals focus mode to avoid distractions

Zoom has unveiled a new Focus Mode that is expected prevent students from being distracted while sitting in a virtual classroom and still allowing the teacher to keep an eye on everyone.

The focus mood ensures that meeting participants can’t see each other’s videos or shared screens, while the host can still see everyone’s webcams. It provides some of the control found in webinar mode, without the complexity and lack of elasticity that’s part of it.

Focus mode seems to be available for free accounts while hosting a webinar costs money.

The company said the Focus mode will put the teacher’s video or screen sharing center stage for students, it won’t be the only thing on their screens. First, participants will still see their own video, as well as any videos or screen shares that are featured by the host. They can also see the names of the other participants, as well as any emoji reactions.

According to Zoom’s Focus Mode Support Article, the feature can be enabled or locked out for accounts, groups, or individual users. After enabling it for your account, you can access the feature by clicking the More button during a meeting.
