TikTok announced that the popular “Milk Crate Challenge” has been banned from its platform due to concerns that users participating in the trend could be seriously injured.
TikTok users who took part in the challenge stack milk crates in a pyramid and then attempt to climb over the unstable structure.
A company spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email that “TikTok prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we are removing videos and redirecting searches to our Community Guidelines to discourage such content. We encourage everyone to exercise caution. their behavior, both online and offline.”
The ban on the challenge came after several health professionals took to social media to voice their concerns and express their dismay at the trend and the danger it poses to those who participate in it. Most of the videos showing the trend show TikTok users falling to the ground trying to climb one side of the makeshift pyramid and down the other.
After the ban, trend hashtag search results on the app now a message “no results found”. The search results page informs users that “this phrase may relate to behavior or content that violates our guidelines. Promoting a safe and positive experience is TikTok’s top priority.”
