The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) say they are not happy with the large-scale arrest by Nigerian security agents of those suspected of being members of the banned organization and its armed unit, Eastern Security Network (ESN).
In a statement on Tuesday by its media and publicity secretary, who goes by the pseudonym Emma Powerful, IPOB claims that the recent crackdown on IPOB elements, which the Nigerian security forces believe are violent, is a strategy to prevent people from taking action for the sovereign nation of Biafra.
IPOB’s statement reads in part: “The Global Family of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu strongly condemns the incessant killings and unprovoked attacks and kidnappings of those suspected of IPOB members and Eastern Security Network. , ESN agents in Ebonyi state by the angry Nigerian security agents.
“This atrocity is being committed with the knowledge of Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi and the infamous EBUBEAGU security unit.
“Their intention is to unleash terror on innocent citizens of Ebonyi State, possibly preventing them from supporting the agitation for the recovery of Biafra.
“These suppression agents, supported by Gov. Dave Umahi, have continued to kill IPOB members and innocent Biafrans, by tagging them ESN agents.
“More than 300 members of IPOB are currently languishing in prisons and other detention centers in Ebonyi State, and many have died in prison.”
IPOB is a banned group in Nigeria campaigning for the secession and sovereignty of Eastern Nigeria.
