Girondin’s Bordeaux striker Samuel Kalu collapsed in the sixth minute of their Ligue 1 match at Olympique Marseille on Sunday and was substituted after returning briefly to the field.
Amid scorching temperatures at the Stade Velodrome, medics rushed to Kalu with a stretcher, but the player was able to get up and walk off the field with the help of his teammates, holding an ice pack to his head.
The Nigerian international resumed play moments later, but appeared dizzy and was substituted in the 14th minute.
The stadium went silent during the incident, which brought back memories of Christian Eriksen’s collapse at Euro 2020 in June when the Danish midfielder suffered a heart attack.
Eriksen’s life was saved when he was given CPR on the field and his heart was restarted with a defibrillator before being taken to hospital, where he recovered from heart surgery.
